I just had a heated discussion with an aquantance of mine about whether it's ok to have a best friend of the opposite gender(The conversation was particularly about males having female best friends), personally I think it's fine, however he said that unless they want to hookup with the girl 'best-friend' it's gay, then proceeded to list gay people we both know who have female best friends. He thinks because it isn't the norm, it isn't exactly socially acceptable.

From 1) The knowledge that I am completely straight, and 2) Know from experience of having had a girl as a best friend(Ironically she is now my girlfriend but my points still held imo). It is my opinion that it is healthy to have a best friend(at least good friend) of the opposite sex as it allows both insight and familiarity, not to mention there is a reason that the two parties are friends in the first place.

Discuss.

I don't have a problem with it. I think it works better in theory than in practice, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it can't work in practice.

I don't really have a definition of "best" friend because that usually implies some kind of uniqueness. So for me the topic just reduces to having friends that are ladies which is not really a problem.

so uh yeah

Ok, I understand what you're saying, and I probably should have clarified this, I didn't become her friend because I liked her, and it doesn't always have to go into something more.

For 2 years, we were just friends and had other relationships, It eventually did become more but 2 years is a long time and it is those 2 years I'm talking about.

Meh, I've been accused of being homosexual a lot in my life, even when my best friend was a guy. Same case when my best friend was a girl. The way I see it, having friends of the opposite gender is quite normal.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Sarah, Melodie and Kaeleigh are my best friends. Hell, they're more like sisters to me than anything. Granted, I've dated Mel and Kaeleigh, and I still love Mel, but that doesn't mean anything, because I know damn well nothing will come of it.

Just because you're closer to females than males doesn't make you gay. Hell, that's probably more straight than having a male as a best friend, especially if you're always around my best friend.

Granted, Nowfist is like a brother to me as well, but lately I've hung out with Kaeleigh more than anyone else. Gay? No. The idiot you were talking with is just another ignorant, narrow-minded fool.

Nothing wrong with it in the slightest. Most of the people I talk to online on a regular basis are girls, and I consider most of them to be my best of friends. I use online because I'm absolutely awkward around both genders irl

If you're looking to date them, though, it probably won't happen in most cases because of the whole "friend zone" concept. Not that there aren't exceptions, but I just don't think it'd be as likely.

I'm gay, and my best friend is a guy. But it really just depends on your personality and what you like in others. If your best friend happens to be one gender or the other, so what?

My best friend is a gay male... However, since I've come to college, I've definitely befriended more females than males and I talk/hang with them all regularly if I get the chance. I see no problem with it.

My best friends are usually guys. Guys are just easier for me to hang out with, though I like being around girls just as much. It's a different kind of crowd, y'know? I don't see any problems with having best friends of the opposite gender.

my best friend is a girl, and she dont look bad at all, but we'd never
think of going out with each other and we dont feel any attraction.
we both agreed on that. girls make better friends in general imo.

I don't see a problem. Your best friend is your best friend, gender shouldn't be an issue.
